Stripping And Waxing Floors Procedure

Prep Area Instructions

Remove all obstacles and furniture from the area First
Follow the dust mopping procedure to remove all debris, dirt, and large objects from the area
Set up an area of about 200 to 400 square feet
Do not try to do a large area all at once without taking steps
The area you prepped will be the area you start with
Block off the entire area that needs to be stripped by setting up the necessary caution/wet floor signs
Create an area for exiting the stripping area
Place rugs down to remove protective foot wear and avoid tracking stripping materials to other parts of the building

Prep Stripping Materials

Line a mop bucket with a plastic liner, similar to something like waste can large trash bag
This will keep the stripper contained and not allow it to enter the bucket area
The mop bucket can then to be used for future mopping purposes without all that clean up
Consult the necessary SDS sheets for the proper stripping solutions
So you are properly acquainted with the hazards associated with the chemicals you'll be using
Take the predetermined stripping solution and pour it into the lined mop bucket
A super concentrated floor wax stripper of 1 quart mixture needs to be mixed with 5 gallons of hot water
That floor wax stripper is concentrated so it needs to be mixed with water
Most solutions are used at full strength but you'll need to consult the label on your specific product to be certain
Put on the necessary safety clothing like proper non slip foot wear and non slip hand protection, safety glasses
Tape off areas like carpet or other flooring using tape and newspaper to prevent splashes

Apply Stripping Solution

You'll want to sufficiently cover the 200 to 400 square foot area you already prepped
Important sweep the whole area while prepping to continue the slow step process towards completion
Apply generous amounts of solution with a mop on the floor and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes to loosen the floor finish before starting floor scrubber
Do not allow the stripper to dry on floor which is why slow steps are important
If you threw stripper all over 3000 sq feet of flooring you would be rushing everything
Take the specified floor stripping pad and attach it the pad driver on your floor scrubber
Auto scrubbers are often the popular choice for stripping, because they can then be used to recover the stripping solution
If you are using a floor scrubber scrub the area once completely and scrubbing again while at the same time over lapping your moves
If you are using a rotary floor scrubber start in the opposite corner of your walk off area
Slowly move towards that area in steps and some areas will require several passes to strip the floor completely of the old floor wax
A black utility stripping pad may be needed to properly get into corners and up against baseboard areas
A baseboard stripper cleaner may also be needed to properly clean the base board splash
keep wet damp wiping cloth in pocket to wipe any splashes to save extra needed to clean things up

Pick Up Dirty Solution

If you are using an auto scrubber after a few passes of just scrubbing flooring lower the squeegee and recover all the stripping solution while continuing to scrub
If a floor rotary scrubber is your stripping machine of choice you'll need to use a wet recovery vacuum that is specialized for wet spill recovery
You'll want to pick up this solution immediately after scrubbing because you don't want this solution to dry on the floor
Hand mopping stripper solution off floor is much harder but is possible
Remember wax does not hide anything so scrub until youre sure you have done your best work

Rinse And Dry Floor

Use a fresh mop bucket or remove the liner from the mop bucket you were using and fill it with clean hot water
Add 1-2 ounces of floor stripping neutralizer per gallon of water to mop bucket
You can also use your auto scrubber mounted with a solution tank to accomplish this
Just make sure to use a different scrub brush or pad than the one you used to strip the floor
Mop or scrub entire area with the neutralizer water combination to try and neutralize as much of the alkaline in the stripper as possible
If the floor is not at a neutral state when putting your floor finish down it will not adhere properly
Using just water to rinse off flooring will work however stripping neutralizer cuts down on time
Wipe down all baseboards and corners to assure all stripping solution is removed
Rinse the floor one or two more times with just clean water to ensure that all stripping solutions are recovered
Remember rinsing is very important to the final product youre seeking when finished

Apply Floor Finish

All flooring areas need to be completely dry before moving on to the next step of applying floor finish
We recommend using a floor drying fan like our 3-speed floor dryer to ensure all areas are completely dry
You never want to walk on wet wax because this means stripping floor again in most cases
Over lap while applying floor finish and never allow wax to begin curing while over lapping the ready areas
New mop heads tend to store lint so shake outside before using in your wax bucket
Never put wax down to heavy where you see bubbles and possible run off lines
Good quality wax will usually fill itself in as it completes the drying process
I suggest you try a small area of 200-400 feet before moving to next section
Several wax coats may be needed to produce a flush smooth shiny floor appearance so do not rush the job
A normal coat of wax needs half hour of drying time even using floor fans
Never place floor fans close to wax on flooring to prevent curling or rolling disasters

Cleanup time

Remember time spent cleaning things up reflects on the job you just completed      Check for splatter on walls and baseboard areas

Removing rust stains

Mix equal parts lemon juice and borax as another option for removing rust stains from ceramic tile.

Mix equal parts salt and white vinegar as yet another cleaning alternative; allow it to stand for three or four hours before scrubbing.

Apply a pumice stone to rust stains to remove them.
